The multi-layer film consists of three basic components: BillerudKorsnäs‘ paper ConFlex® Silk, a sealing layer made of BASF’s certified home compostable and partly bio-based biopolymer ecovio® and BASF’s water-based adhesive Epotal® Eco 3675 X which joins the film to the paper. In July, BillerudKorsnäs announced its intention to launch a functional 180 degree bendable straw made out of FiberForm later this year for food and beverage industries in the UK and US. The Paper Straw Co will produce the patent-pending U-Bend straw in Manchester, UK, and the US for individual drink cartons such as juice, milk and water. Billerud (of Sweden) and Metsä Board (of Finland) are companies whose forestry roots date back 150 years; but poor market conditions and the companies’ own high exposure cost them dearly. In 2008, packaging paper accounted for 68% of Billerud’s sales, and printing paper was responsible for more than 80% of Metsä Board’s revenues.
